This seems like a total non-thought to me.  Didn't Bach, Mozart, Mantegna,
Giotto, Gruenawald, the guy who illustrated Vesalius' Anatomy, and so forth, 
produce mostly "on command"?  Isn't much that they produced beautiful?  
And why should one therefore despise what they are?  What am I missing?
