Dear Luke,

Nice try, I reckon. I realize that it could be comforting to yourself and
others to think that I am psychologically deranged. My documented madness
would explain a lot for you. But nothing is ever that easy. Nothing is ever
that black and white.

No, I have never undergone psychoanalysis.

My first husband was a psychologist. He was schooled in such a way that
decried the psychoanalytical model. In hindsight, I think that part of the
reason for this is that psychoanalysis requires great blocks of time.
Indeed, true psychoanalysis would require such large blocks of time that
only the very rich and very demanding could afford.

When David was studying, he used to tape record his patients so that he
could consider what they said at great length. I used to listen to them with
him. It was interesting and it was plain to me that many of his clients were
"messed up" in such a way that would require an entire lifetime of listening.

Most were hardcore schizophrenics, so called. For the most part,
schizophrenics become wards of the state. As wards of the state, they are
given drugs and social workers because there is no time for anything else.

I think that it is a pity that the world is in such a rush that it has no
time for itself.
