RE:Alan Shapiro's request. If my memory doesn't fail me, I think
there is some relevant information in Arthur Kroker's _Theory of the
virtual class_ regarding humanity's fear of the permanant and the
will to virtuality. The book is in the CultureText series published
by St Martin's Press in the US and New Perspectives (I think) in
