Subject: rmconf plan

On the RM Conference. I suggest we designate Tobin as the one to
pull together the panel. I propose that the panel be an open panel
of those who have proposed doing something on critical realism.
The only one definitely committed is Tobin.

Derek -- My understanding is Derek already has a paper approved for
presentation -- Derek, would you present this within the framework
of a Critical Realism panel, or do you have other commitments? If
you would present it, what is its title?

I think we should drop the idea of the reading group and also drop
the idea of more than one panel.

Hans -- My understanding was Hans also had a paper on ideology and
would present it.

Tim -- Tim, do you want to present your piece on realist
aesthetics? Could you present it in the context of an introduction
to Marx as a critical realist?

I would be happy to do an introduction of this sort (Marx as a
critical realist) using the example of commodity fetishism and the
marxist concept of value, with particular reference to law and
contract formation, but my problem is I don't really know whether
I can get the finances together to go. I'm like Doug -- I think
critical realism needs to be present there.* I'd like to go and be
part of that, but I can't buy the tickets just now and I won't be
clear on whether I can go for some weeks yet.

Are there others who want to fill the shoes of TBA?

Anyway, I think what we can do, and I think this would be accepted
by the conference organizers, is commit to a critical realism panel
and ask for a slot. The papers to be presented would be Derek (I
hope), Tobin, and TBA, with the TBA Hans, or Tim, or me or another.
I propose Tobin and I write this up and present it to RM next week.
Then if we get more interest, or more people able to give a fixed
commitment before the end of the month deadline, we can propose
another panel or otherwise fine tune what we expect to offer.

Can we get expressions of support or opposition for this?

Howard

*I'm like Doug -- let's have a pinata in the shape of a vulgar
marxist (carrying a hammer and sickle) and when you beat it open
candies and flyers burst out with the words "epistemic fallacy"
emblazoned on them in bright festival colors.
