Tobin,

Gellner's conception of nationalism is pretty linear and
largely an offshoot of modernization theory.  I don't think
there's much there, in short, and Gellner's hostility towards
the Third World was notorious, making it difficult for him
to give a decent of nationalism on a global scale.
