To add my own two cents to all this:

I agree with Tobin and Hans that, as worded, the criticisms of Hans were
unfair, especially since Hans stated his decision to run the list
democratically rather than authoritarianly.

On the other hand, as the list lacks any formal mechanisms to register the
voice of the people, it is unclear how we will achieve democracy rather
than anarchy.  As a sociologist, I will observe our emergent structure with
interest.

Wallace's post is suggestive:  Displace the issue from Ralph to an
establishment of procedure. Regardless of what has gone before, perhaps we
all now can somehow agree to someone's draft of a statement of netiquette.
If we did, Hans, could that be presented when someone initially subscribes
along with a requirement of agreement?  Some lists have that.

That still would leave open the question of enforcement, but at least all
members would actually once have had to accede to some basic courtesy.

On the other hand, maybe all this procedural stuff might just stifle the
list.  I don't know.
