Hi Gary,

As I am just trying to finish up a critical discussion of alethic truth, I
was interested in your comment that

>Alethic truth is such an essential aspect of DCR
>that it was a shock for me to see Howie attack it.

I wonder if you'd be willing to tell me a little bit more about this -- if
it would be better to do it "off-line," which it probably would be at this
point, that's fine (we could cc: anyone who's terribly interested). I've
made my own differences with Howie on this topic pretty clear; what I'm
really interested in is why the concept of real causal structure x of y will
not suffice for dialectical critical realism -- why, in your view, Bhaskar
needs alethic truth instead.

I genuinely can't figure this out, and am disarmed by it. It's nice to know
WHY someone thinks what they think, even if you disagree with what they
think, and for the life of me I can't understand what the attachment is to
this idea. I keep thinking that the problem is that I don't know German
idealism.

I promise I won't get you in to a whole long exchange, I'm just really curious.

Warmly,
Ruth
