Carrol,

Have just reread your post and apologise for suggesting that your 
position was "symmetrical" with Ruth. I guess the only point that I 
would make is that there seems to be an implicit assumption by some 
on the list that "Theory" is completely independent of "Thought". I 
absolutely agree that any attempt to come to a position on the 
current crisis utilising only "theory" is absurd. But the idea that 
one can really discuss anything seriously with such a conception of 
"theory" strikes me as absurd. Conversly the idea that the current 
crisis and the success or failure of any given theory to address it 
adequately is not relevent to how we view that theory (ie is the 
theory any use for thought) strikes me as ridculouse. Cripes am I 
becoming an empiricist as well as a consequentialist?
