Subject: BHA: Peace politics from below: a campaign, vigils, demos and letter writing

GUSH SHALOM - pob 3322, Tel-Aviv 61033, Israel - http://www.gush-
shalom.org/

Meretz no longer in the government - may that increase the level of extra-
parliamentary activity, and show the Barak government that "there is a
street" not only on the right.

The following however shows what is up already:

1) An Israeli-Palestinian campaign is under way against the building of a new
"by-pass road" between the settlements of Ofrah and Beit-El, which would
involve both extensive confiscation of Palestinian land - including houses -
and widespread ecological destruction.
Gush Shalom is among the initiators together with Peace Now, Bat Shalom,
Rabbis for Human Rights and the Israeli Committee Against House
Demolitions. The main Palestinian partner, the Palestinian Land Defense
Committee, will in the next couple of days provide a list of the participating
Palestinian organizations. More Israeli organizations - especially the
environmentalists - may still step in. As soon as we have the definitive list of
participants, we will sent you more about it..

(2) The idea of Friday vigils (remember Women in Black/Yesh Gvul) was
revived
in Haifa and is spreading (iritka-AT-zahav.net.il, azutra-AT-hotmail.com). The
slogans cover peace, social justice and the environment, as different aspects
of the same ideology and you can bring your own.

Haifa:
	Friday 13:00 to 14:00 Mata"m Junction

Rehovot:
Information booth Friday 11:30 to 13:30 Corner of Hertzl Beit Hapoalim
Vigil Women and Mothers for peace Friday 13:30 14:30 Weizmann institute
	junction

Tel Aviv (this is the ongoing vigil since the beginning of the Intifada):
as always across at the Tnuva Junction (corner of Haifa Rd. and Petach
  Tikva Rd. ) Friday 13:00 to 14:00

(3) Agroup of Jewish and Arab women took the initiative of holding "Peace
gatherings on the Northern Border" every Friday - each week in a different
border community. The first action is due on the morning of Friday, June 23,
at Kibbutz Misgav Am; for details call Yael Agmon 06-6392728.

(4) A weekly vigil protesting the recent house demolition wave ordered by the
Interior Minister Nathan Sharansky, the former Soviet dissident and human
rights activist. On Tuesday's at 6 in the afternoon at the minister's private
house, Beit Eshel Street, Old Katamon. This was decided during the demo of last
week, organized by Bat Shalom (batshalo-AT-netvision.emt.il) and ICAHD
(halper-AT-iol.co.il). For the ongoing letter writing campaign, see end of
message.

(5) B'tselem invites you on Wednesday, the 28th of June, for a joint
demonstration with the people of Yatta, Hebron region, to bring the water
shortage in the Occupied Territories to the attention of the Israeli
public and the international community.

Buses will be leaving from:
Tel-Aviv, 8.30 - The parking lot by the entrance to the Arlozorov Railway
	Station.
Jerusalem, 9:00 - The parking lot by the B'Tselem office, Emek Refaim 43
(NB: confirm your participation with Noam Lubell, tel -02-5617271).

(6) The Committee Against Torture (PCAT-AT-netvision.net.il) needs volunteers to
staff stalls throughout Central Jerusalem on "The UN International Day of
Support for Victims of Torture" - Monday, June 26 - on which will be displayed
booklets, newspaper articles and brochures relating to the protest against the
use of new forms of torture (contact Ph. 02-5630073).

----
You can still send your protest e-mails or faxes to
Minister of Interior Natan Sharansky sar-AT-moin.gov.il, fax: 02-5666376

cc: Prime Minister Ehud Barak: e-mail pm-AT-pmo.gov.il
fax 972-2-566-4838
cc: US Secretary of State Madeline Albright e-mail secretary-AT-state.gov,
fax 1-202-736-4461

You may compose your own letter or just write to Sharansky:

Don't send demolition teams to Palestinian houses. Where you soon will give
up authority it is senseless; and where you will remain in power, it's
merciless. In both cases you are only sowing hatred.
