Ian,

I'm inclined to think that the issue at stake can usefully be isolated 
away from the question of levels of abstraction. On the latter, Tony 
Lawson has a chapter in his book (following Bertell Ollman). Bob 
Jessop and Andrew Sayer also have critical realist stuff on this. 
You probably know all this already!
