From: "Marshall Feldman" <marsh-AT-uri.edu> Subject: BHA: RE: Re: DNA coup d'tat of anthropology Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 16:52:37 -0400 Here is a correction about the allegedly "Jewish genes" (some of you may remember a Saturday Night Live skit with this theme, but that's another story). They weren't any such thing. What was the case is among self-identified Jews of European ancestry approximately 10% are considered "Cohaneem" or high priests. According to biblical tradition, these Jews are descendants of Aaron, Moses' brother. DNA tests on these Jews do indeed indicate that they had a common male ancestor about 3200 years ago. The African tribe observes almost all same the biblical laws (e.g., dietary laws, Sabbath observance, etc.) as do Jews with European ancestry. Included here is the tradition of identifying some of their members as high priests. It turns out that the high priests in the African tribe have the identical gene indicating the same common male ancestor about 3200 years ago as do the Europeans. So, rather than have distinctly "Jewish genes," what we have here is a DNA confirmation of common male ancestor that is remarkably consistent with Biblical lore and (what has heretofore been considered) Jewish tradition. Marsh Feldman BTW, I recently read that DNA evidence indicates that roughly one in every 200 Englishmen (sic) has African (i.e., "black") ancestry. Historians ascribe this to the Roman occupation of the British Isles. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-bhaskar-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu > [mailto:owner-bhaskar-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu]On Behalf Of > DBBwanika-AT-netscape.net > Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2001 4:29 AM > To: Lichter-AT-uclalumni.net; bhaskar-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu > Cc: psn-AT-csf.colorado.edu > Subject: BHA: Re: DNA coup d'tat of anthropology > > > Michael > > Your article calls for further elaboration about this 'white' > (sic ) i.e. Europeans and 'black'(sic) (Africans) genes.
