John:

Unless my memory fails me completely, Philosophy and the Idea of Freedom
is mostly taken up with an extended critique of Richard Rorty, but there
is also a a very good essay on Marxism and philosophy that presents the
case for the importance of Althusser very well.

The book was billed as volume 1 of something or other and the "Eclipse of
Reason," but to my knowledge no later voluems appeared. Helps explain the
focus on Rorty, though.
