hmm, interseting, but i've never read Bhaskar as implying such;
i've always understood that the techniques of social science are
not only (passive) observation and (statistical) data gathering,
but also (active) experimental and quasi-experimental reseach
designs, inwhich certain (sociale) variables are deliberately
maniputated e.g. in simulations and gaming-techniques; for me
experimentation is not related to open or closed systems, it can
be applied in both.
