From: "dbwanika" <dbwanika-AT-uganda.co.ug> Subject: BHA: Then what is Logical Posivitism & Dialectical Realism Date: Thu, 31 Oct 2002 10:57:04 +0100 Richard , Jamie, Jan help on this: In Structuration theory Anthony Giddens (1994) The Constitution of Society, seems to be saying that people follow structural sets; the rules and regulation: morals, social values, religous beliefs, ethical, etc.,. What does he mean by structural sets vis vis the four plannar social being encompassing the social cube and his so called nexus of competing ideology? (plato etc,. 1994:97 By way why is there a natural death of religion and morals and social or society values in industrialised societies as per Giddens assertation? This is interesting because he, (Giddens) seems to imply - the state is not equivalent to society in deploying: morals, social values, religious beliefs, ethical, etc, in regard to the use of languages as signifiers. So what is social institutions as opposed to state institutions and also what are their effects in regard to positivism vis vis dialectical realism? So he means to imply state LAWS are different from social CONVENTIONS? If that is fine with you, then what is it that is implied with LOGICAL POSITIVISM as opposed to DIALECTICAL REALISM? See also http://query.nytimes.com/search/abstract?res=F20B11FE3B5C0C718CDDA90994DA404482 I hear, logical positivism is the clearest methodology in science ever discovered, though Wittgenstein L. (1953) Philosophical Investigation, seems to suggest LANGAUAGE as in Bhaskar's epistemic fallacy, does not quite well define real and actual situational conditions rather than the empirical one. Let me get an example on logical positivism (empirical) statements: All urban dweller are human beings Human beings have freedoms Therefore all urban dwellers have freedoms. So what is wrong with this statement in regard to Giddens structuration theory where people follow structural set of rules and regulation: morals, social values, religious beliefs, ethical, etc,. Fine!, we can also add All children and CEO are human beings Human beings have free will Children as CEO have free-will so children have free will. Is this is what is meant by logical deduction? And what so problematic with it ? If children can choose that is their problem. They can as well try drugs and learn from experience. Doesn't these statement rhythm well with Bhaskar's dialectical critical realism- so what is the difference? By the way how could bhaskar talk of the logical of scientific discovery at the same time condemning logical positivism? - Did i understand him right ? sorry for my english , I am African writing english with some heavy english connotations is a social construct, not mine construct. best, bwanika. ______________ logon on & Join a ug-academicsdb list at http://www.coollist.com/subscribe.html List ID :ug-academicsdb-AT-coollist.com Your Email Address : ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bwanika url: http://uhpl.uganda.co.ug e-mail: dbwanika-AT-uganda.co.ug http://pub59.ezboard.com/fugandamanufacturersassociationfrm1 --- from list bhaskar-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
