From: "Phil Walden" <phil-AT-pwalden.fsnet.co.uk> Subject: BHA: Truth and falsity lie in objective reality Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2003 02:22:02 -0000 Hi Mervyn, all, I agree with much of what you've been re-educating them with, Mervyn. I find it hard to take their posts seriously because I don't believe they believe what they are writing. It is only analytical philosophers (and people who have swallowed their story) who hold that truth and falsity reside only in language. The rest of the world holds that truth and falsity lie in objective reality. Truth and falsity here are value judgments that people project onto aspects of objective reality that become manifest. Language may or may not be part of this process - the later Wittgenstein held that there could not be any non-linguistic mental events but I don't see how he can account for e.g. emotions purely from language. If truth and falsity resided only in language that would surely mean that truth and falsity resided only in the transitive dimension of reality. But then what would be left for the intransitive dimension of reality? To me it seems that those on this list who are arguing that truth and falsity reside only in the transitive dimension of reality have a lot of explaining to do. They can't do it.
