Ismail, I'd start with Ellen Meiksins Wood's 'Democracy Against 
Capitalism'' (Cambridge Uni Press, 1995). She describes her work as a 
renewal of historical materialism where (as per the inside cover blurb) she 
explores

"the concept of democracy in both the ancient and modern world, examining 
the concept's relation to capitalism, and raising questions about how 
democracy might go beyond the limits imposed on it by captialism."
