Date: Sat, 19 Jul 1997 16:58:49 -0700 From: Ariosto Raggo <df803-AT-freenet.carleton.ca> Subject: MB: 'a'-more While writing "messed up" I was constantly looking awry at the start of my readings in Zizek, in _Looking Awry_ and some of the thoughs that Adorno began his study of _Alban Berg_ with -- such as; "Evanescence, the revocation of one's own existence, is for Berg not the stuff of expression, not music's allegorical theme, but rather the law to which music submits."(pg.2) And also, " He fused the art of thematic manipulation, of strict motivic economy... with the principle of continous transition...from each there a remnant(ein Rest) is retained, ever samller, until finally only a vanishingly small vestige remains: not only does the theme establish its own insubstantiality, but the formal interrelationships between succesive sections are woven together with infinitesimal care." And yes... I was 'looking awry' at Beatrice who is approached as Dante reminds us, through a wall of fire that Nietzsche calls enthuthiasm; a condensation of memory agitating a distant caress that burns away all relations and retracts its own saying now encrypted with streaming noise -- trembling and an animal's cry...'a'-more. I only wish I would have had more time to have wrought a more intricate post, stazio;- to compare to the generosity and lustre that layed itself out as I read your response. I have not had the good fortune to meet a teacher whose brilliance I respected. Your (k)-ant like tenacity is to be admired. In time I will do the recommended reading. How many is that now, a hundred books and essays without exaggerating too much? I need a break and I am participating in some events that require my attention. You don't know how much time is being taken by our exchanges this summer to remember, to remember well. Ariosto "Fumario' Raggo
