Stoekl's intro is good and helpful.  But I think he has a tin ear for the 
novel.  The fake colloqualisms that he translates into are grating, but so
what ("I'm a trap for you," or something).  What's worse is that he doesn't
eg get consistency in the parallels between opening scene and closing scene
of the novel (the surprising rapidity with which the hands of Sorge's two
attackers move--I'm doing this from memory now, so I'm not remembering ex-
actly where Stoekl misses it, but he does).  I'm aware of how hard it is to
translate Blanchot, but Stoekl's seems as though he's not aware of how hard
it is--as though it's done very quickly.  --William Flesch
