Subject: Re: cultural capital: skill or signifier?

Toni morrison is an african american writer (_Sula_, _Beloved_) who often
writes about mother-daughter relations. According to the distinction made
so far on the list I guess knowledge of her work would be cultural capital
within the field of feminist literary criticism while she herself has a
mess of symbolic capital given that she has received prestigious awards
for her work. (I think she won the Booker Prize a few years back. )

Having said that I agree with Jo that such distinctions should not be taken
as ends in themselves. Nonetheless I will take any opportunity to blow
morrison's horn.
