I realize this is now wildly irrelevant to the list topic, so this will be
my last word on the subject.  (1) Preserved Latin grammarians talk about
vowel quantity.  (2) Latin verse is primarily structured in terms of vowel
quantity (well, actually, syllable weight) and so we can use it to
determine the quantity of most vowels.  See Allen's wonderful _Vox Latina_
for all you'd ever want to know about our knowledge of the pronunciation of
a dead language.
