From: "Michael Kelly" <mhk-AT-LANG.SOTON.AC.UK> Date: Mon, 17 Jun 1996 06:54:05 GMT Subject: Re: Info Request: Geneology of "Habitus" I think that, along with a range of other sources, Henri Bergson may be part of the context of 'Habitus'. Bergson's contrast of intuitive versus mechanical ways of living focuses on the notion of habit, as a kind of sclerosis of life, which to a certain extent dehumanises those who live purely by its routines. I think the negative associations of Bergsonian habit may be behind Bourdieu's more recent attempts to emphasise the possibilities of agency and creativity. ------------------------------ Prof. Michael Kelly School of Modern Languages University of Southampton, U.K. E-mail: mhk-AT-lang.soton.ac.uk Fax: +44 1703 593288 Tel: +44 1703 592191 (direct) ********************************************************************** Contributions: bourdieu-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Commands: majordomo-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Requests: bourdieu-approval-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu
