Senior Lectureship in Sociology

Applications are invited from suitably qualified sociologists for a Senior
Lectureship in Sociology. The University of Sydney introduced its first
year Sociology course in 1991 and the full four-year program has been
running since 1994.

The successful applicant is expected to have proven strengths in both
classical and contemporary Sociological Theory, expertise in a number of
substantive areas of teaching and research and a proven capacity for
University administration. The fields which the Department is most
concerned to cover include Deviance, Health, Organisations, Ethnicity and
Migration, and the ability to teach qualitative research methods will be an
advantage. However, applicants with demonstrable expertise in other areas
not yet taught in the Department will also be considered.

The successful applicant will also require a proven capacity for
administration and research supervision at all levels. He or she will be
expected to assumed responsibility for the coordination of at least one
major component in the Sociology program and play an active role in course
development. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability to perform
at Senior Lecturer level and should possess advanced qualifications in
Sociology (PhD or equivalent), a strong research and publication record,
proven ability in teaching, administration and postgraduate supervision and
a proven capacity to work as part of a team.

The position is available for five years from 1 July 1997. Membership of a
University-approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for
