i think the place you should start for Bourdieu on education and capital
is: Bourdieu, P and Passeron, J-C (1990) Reproduction in Education, Society
and Culture, (Sage, London).
On education and social origin in general, Ishida, (1991?) Social mobility
in Contemporary Japan, is an empirical comparison of Japan, the US and UK,
which you may find interesting.
