This is the first dedicated examination of the application of Bourdieu's ideas to education. The book begins with an overview of the major concepts in a Bourdieuian approach to research in education and an account of the reception of Bourdieu's thinking by the educational research community. The approach is then explored through a series of specific pedagogic research studies, looking at primary schooling, language in the classroom, young people's career decision making, and academic discourse. These studies show that Bourdieu's theory of practice can provide insights beyond many conventional approaches. Each contributor then draws on their experiences of using the ideas in order to raise issues of reflexivity in developing a Bourdieuian perspective. In a final section, principles, methods and techniques derived from the theoretical content and practical examples in the book are set out in terms of practical application. Bourdieu's methodological tools are assessed and presented in such a way as to offer guidance for researchers wishing to adopt and use them in their own work.
