Gregor McLennan discusses Alexander's critique at length in the most recent
issue of New Left Review:

McLennan, Gregor. Fin de sociologie; the dilemmas of multidimensional
social theory. New Left Review. No. 230 July/August 1998: 58-90.

The relevant section is titled `Homo sociologicus' and appears on pages 83-90.
