Hi,

Thanks Olivier for the excerpts from Le Monde.

I'm afraid I have missed some of the recent conversation on the list on
these matters, so those of you who are following the fracas might be aware
of this reference already. I came across a journal called "L'evenement du
jeudi" which in its 27 Aug-2 Sep edition purports to cover the debate. It
carries an "interview" with J Verdes-Leroux, (an extremely underwhelming
mutual gratification between an interviewer and interviewee who excite one
another into a frenzy of sorts), as well as other stuff which seemed to
amount to a smear campaign against Bourdieu -- different perspectives about
Bourdieu were covered there, perspectives which at time appear a bit
contradictory (e.g. that his sociology is essentially a sham, or that his
sociology is OK but does not justify his political action, or that
regardless of his sociology, the long-dead intellectual heros of his time
didn't really like him...) but have one thing in common, namely they
criticise Bourdieu. Some of these criticisms verge on the downright stupid
(e.g. Jacques Attali's -- the guy must be hallucinating or something).

Incidentally, does anybody know who owns that journal or what its political
identification/affiliation is? I know very little about the French media.

Cheers,
A.
