Motivation Power - the Ethical Challenge for the Powerful

Social power is generally understood as the ability to force other
people to undertake certain action. Less noticeable but equally
important are "softer" forms of power that do not force others, but
rather influence the determination of their will: motivation power.
What role does this often overlooked form of power play today in state
and society? Baumann's paper will discuss the constitution of
motivation power and the relevant presuppositions.

The lecture is organised by The European Institute for International
Affairs and is sponsored by the Heinrich Boell-Stiftung Baden-
Wuerttemberg.

Peter Baumann was educated in Philosophy and Social Sciences at the
University of Goettingen and the University of Paris. He got his PhD
from the University of Goettingen, where he also did his
"Habilitation" working as an assistant professor. Most recently
he published "Power and Motivation" (Macht und Motivation).
