Why not? We're non-supervisory workers, for sure, skilled laborers hired
to do a job for the university because they can't afford to hire full-time
professors. But we work hard for not much money and can certainly be
organized into a union, and a pretty darn progressive one at that 
(http://www.efn.org/~gtff).
