Dear Worlfgang: I hope you find this useful, though maybe it is a little short. Cris Martinez crisdar-AT-tau.org.ar Pierre Bourdieu was born in 1930, in Béarn, a prpovince in southern France. Bourdieu studied philosophy at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris in the late 1940's and early 50's before moving into anthorpological and sociological research. His first studies in Algeria , where he carried out his initial ethnographic research, were published in the late 1950's and early 60's. the research in Algeria formed the basis of much of his subsequent theoretical writing, most notably "Outline of a Theory of Practice"tr.R Nice(Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1977) and "The Logic of Practice", tr. RNice(Cambridge, Polity Pres, 1990), In the early 60's Bourdieu also initiated a series of collaborative reszearch porjects on French cultures an deducations, from his institutional base at the Ecole des hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Pris, where he founded the Centre de Sociologie européenne, These projects have resuslted in numeros publications, among the most recent of wheich are "Distinction: a Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste", tr. R Nice (Cambridge, Mass.; Harvard University Press, 1984), "Homo Academicus", tr. P.Collier (Cambridge ; Polity Press, 1988) and "La noblesse détart: grandes écoles et esprit de corps"(Paris, Minuit, 1989) Bourdieu is currently Professor of Sociology at the College de France and Director of the Centre de Sociologie Européenne.
