Subject: Re: Class's or class' ?


There's something - or is it just me? - fabulously or to the point of the
most bottomless irony disturbing about a conversation, on a Bourdieu list,
about the distinction between two possible forms of the genetive of class.
The fact that this nervousness is about a law which operates noticeably only
in the space of written language (we can't hear the difference) looks to set
in motion the kind of critique of Bourdieu we can imagine moving in from the
other directions a 'surpassing' of structuralism has taken. That is, it
seems to say, the power of the law to reproduce the idea, say, of 'classes',
is operating in relation finally to a textual dissemination (giving on,
perhaps, to the inchoacy of a revolution of the word) rather than to any
vision of a sociologically definite resistance or insurgence. But at the
same time, the particular space in which the nervousness finds outlet (the
list as academic ante-room) looks to mark most clearly, almost to parody,
the defined space of class. Fun.
