stouthearted, check the archives. Indeed, what's funny about this list is 
that there's almost no activity for months, then there's a flurry of posts 
sparked because someone asks a basic question which flares up into a 
firefight, and it all ends when someone asks about "the sociology of email 
lists." I agree with you that the "roles" available to participants in an 
email list are relatively static, but this list is relatively novel in that 
the usual "cycle of flames" usually ends with a call to refexivity (which 
usually has the effect of killing off all list activity for the foreseeable 
future).
