On a somewhat tongue-in-cheek note, I can't help but hope that maybe my effect on the field will be just the one you outline below. If I was to 'map' the cycle of activity, I suspect it would tend to reach the 'peak' of its signal/noise ratio shortly _after_ a long period of silence. But I'm certainly not the email list police. And there is, yet, a decent study of email discussion still to be written. Perhaps I should start a mailing list about it.
