Kent, my earlier comment (asking whether Simon's distaste for the extraneous weren't akin to a desire for transparency) was not intended, at least, to be an interpretation of Derrida (or, in fact, to be Derridean--I hope it was "Jonian"!). Nor was it an accusation, or rather I hope my comments aren't taken in the spirit of accusation and counter-accusation. It was meant as a contribution to this reflexive dialogue over what we want from this list. In general, I think that discussion lists such as this one often promise the earth, especially perhaps to those who see themselves as marginalised from academia--it promises a surrogate or parallel space of thought. And yes, sometimes they fulfil that function, but often they disappoint, not least because those who feel themselves more fully within academia have much less at stake. Cantankerousness and bitterness then can arise. > kent strock Take care Jon Jon Beasley-Murray Spanish and Portuguese University of Manchester jon.beasley-murray-AT-man.ac.uk http://www.art.man.ac.uk/spanish/jbm.html http://www.art.man.ac.uk/lacs/ ********************************************************************** Contributions: bourdieu-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Commands: majordomo-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Requests: bourdieu-approval-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu
