Subject: Vinegar of the Four Thieves

The media having as yet to mention anything about
plants as first defense against bioterrorism (a
pathology in its own right), what follows points to
militant ethnobotany of the Middle Ages. Because it
directly involves the socius, over-categorization of
pathogens may blind one to some important universals
concerning the pathogenesis of disease.

 Vinegar of the Four Thieves:

Place in one gallon of red wine vinegar

 2 oz. lavender flowers
1.5 oz. each of the following:
 rue
 sage
 mint
 sea wormwood
 Roman wormwood
 rosemary
 1.5 oz. camphor

1.25 oz. of each of the following:
 Calamus aromaticus*
 cinnamon
 cloves
 mutmeg
 garlic

Place in a sunny window. Let steep for two weeks,
gently mixing daily. Strain off after this two week
 period, and keep refrigerated.

 *The purported cancer-causing compound beta-asarone
occurs in the roots of Asian Calamus spp. North
American Calamus spp. do not seem to contain this
agent. See Pubmed for further details.
