Pam, if you're interested in analysing how 'common sense' (which isn't a 
very helpful term methinks) is located within higher education it might 
be worth looking at Basil Bernstein's work on knowledge structure 
(Pedagogy, Symbolic Control and Identity) where he provides some 
concepts for analysing the structuring of knowledge which comprises 
'commonsense' and that of academic languages. In particular, have a look 
at horizontal / vertical discourses and knowledge structures. They are 
useful tools.
