Batoul is focusing on Language and Symbolic Power and I am as well. Any objection to starting our discussion with that text?

Well why don't we just hijack this list and if there are any problems from the establishment then we move? ("In-ter-po-late, in-ter-po-late," so said the Althussarian darlek in a modulated authoritative voice.)

Although, I don't about everyone else but I think a separate list will allow us beginners to feel more comfortable. Particularly when people are being chastised for organising f2f groups or encounters on list.

If it is to be this list, why not a meet and greet? Let's see how long we can last till someone gets pissed off.

I am a PhD candidate at the Uni of Western Sydney in Australia. My research interest is in modified-car culture, from a US perspective that would be hot-rods, customs, lowriders, etc. There has been very little written about any of this stuff from a serious academic perspective, so I will be doing some basic theorising to have some sort of framework to think through the (sub)culture. Oh and I am coming from a cultural studies perspective.

If people think they are ready to rock then I will post up the first stage of the Wacquant (1989) list (with fear of copyright infringement), which I have typed into a word format.

    Cheerio,

    Glen.

If there are no objections to opening up this list to a more basic discussion of Bourdieu, that would work well. I suggested starting a new list b/c I thought a discussion for beginners might be well beyond the intended use of the list.

Why not just use this list? It would be a shame to start a new list and then have everyone on this list migrate to it.

However, I am relatively new here (~ 6 months) and don't know its intended purpose and scope but I do know that it has been relatively inactive since I've been on it. What do some of it's early members (or moderator) feel about opening it up to a more basic discussion of Bourdieu? Or is better to start another list?
