Bourdieu and Literacy Education

Call for Papers

Editors:

Dr. Allan Luke, Dean of the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Dr. Jim Albright, Assistant Professor English Education/Teaching of English Program, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, USA.

We are interested in the submission of manuscripts as chapters for an edited book on both the theoretical and practical articulation of Pierre Bourdieu's work in the discipline of literacy education. Manuscripts may wish focus on some of the following:

· demonstrations of how a Bourdieuian stance can enable a powerful sociological and cultural analysis of literacy education

·        explorations of how such a stance can enable researchers, teachers and students to engage with and transform available capital, social fields and systems of exchange;

· analysis of principled and practicable relations between Bourdieuian concepts and models and other theoretical, epistemological and sociocultural disciplines and discourses.

Please contact both editors electronically with an outline of your submission by September 30, 2003. Final manuscripts must be submitted electronically to both editors by January 1, 2004. No late manuscripts will be considered. Manuscript length should not exceed 15, 000 words including works cited, using APA format, 12 pt. We will then move quickly to an online refereeing process and return to authors with yes or no decisions on their manuscripts by January 31, 2004.

We are both acutely aware of the delays, prevarications, missed deadlines and implied promises of the ^Ñanthology game^Ò. Our approach is to work quickly, decisively to assemble a volume which particularly emphases the work of emergent Bourdieu scholars, and then go completed manuscript in hand to one of several major publishers we have worked with before with an eye to speedy publication and distribution.
