If you think that young Islamic women want to wear the veil as a sign of
identity you are sadly mistaken. I teach in the University of Paris system
and I can tell you that in my long experience these young women take their
veils off once they see that they are safe from their fundamentalist male
oppressors.

And is it possible to see this veil thing as totally unrelated to Islam
as a religion ? Where we would find "progressive" groups and
"extreme/obscurantists" ones ? What about adolescents who try to assert
their identity as all adolescents do ? Some wear mini skirts, some wear
old worn out jeans some wear a head scarf etc ... Of course the symbol
chosen to assert one's identity reflects one culture/upbringing, but
considering everything that has been written on the subject I see much
more Republican fundamentalism than Muslim fundamentalism in what is
going in France now. We (?) have to worry more about the French State
that only takes cosmetic measures to satisfy a conservative electorate
without doing anything about the real causes of unemployment etc than
of a few young ladies who probably will get a reality check in a few
years if not taken to the front of the stage for wearing a head scarf
and not being willing to show their body to boys during sport classes.
