Ed's comment is on target although I tend to think of it a bit differently (or rather, my best example is somewhat different). The relation between genotypes and phenotypes is a virtual actual relation. While the genotype is completely determined it actualizes itself (in an interaction with an environment [braodly conceived]) the actualization bearing no 'resemblance' to its virtual components. On another note, I'm trying to think about a possible relationship between Deleuze's notions of series and event and Foucault/Nietzsche's notion of genealogy. Anybody got any thoughts and/or references? cc ------------------
