I think there's a passage in 'The Fold' on this precursor thing, too & I might be wrong but I think he got this rather spooky obsession (?) with this 'dog feels the rod before he's hit'-idea from him. One could indeed elaborate (premonition, fatal attraction, desire to (be) (de)terminate(d), monad, render field in x-dimensions, user stopped, close window.).
