No help with the second question, but should you really be interested in
the first, I recommend L. Wolpert`s >Developmental Biology< to you. As
I understand, Wolpert is a true die-hard scientist of worst western,
academic, rationalist breeding, so his writing may not entirely suit your
taste, but he sure knows about his subject.
