But if what you say is the case, then let's discuss what you find barbaric
about this statement ... i don't think the universe really cares whether an
alleged fact is barbaric or not ...

I don't think it's so farfetched to suppose that lifestyle and the way one
lives one's life, the way one habitually feels, etc. affects one's physiology
... i mean obviously it does ... but so much that it can even be implicated in
disease ...

now maybe this guru didn't take it this far, but a la Ivan Illich, I'd use it
as an indictment of the social system we use in, see the body as rebelling
against what is being imposed upon it, and maybe if we constructed a more
joyful, affirming life, we wouldn't face some of this nonsense! I'm not
supposing a utopia, but one doesn't need to in order to project a state of
better peace with one's body than the present state of misery!!
