Let me go further. Part of a critique of representation is a critique of the
idea of selected people speaking for other people, making decisions for other
people, instead of local autonomy (this doesn't imply a lack of linkage and
interdependence). Ivan Illich's critique of expertise and professionalism are
right on target here. What may be suggested is a return to the vernacular.
