Francisco Varela died on May 28th.
His pioneering work, which straddled biology, second and third order
cybernetics, and cognitive science, profoundly influenced my own 
scholarship,
especially on Deleuze and Guattari; and, his ethics,
rooted in cognitive science, biology and Buddhism,
enriches us all, scholars or no.
