Now you mention it, I remember that was his explanation.

Maybe we don't need to be hung up on whether he was a Popperian, as though
Popper owned his ideas and nobody is allowed to use them unless he or she
signed up as a card-carrying Popperian.

The more important question is what he added or subtracted from the ideas
that we think of as "Popperian" (if it matters).

I am in favour of generous attributions (though you would never know it from
my web site) and I think the profession at large has been ungenerous to
Popper. Still, the point is to move on and develop the ideas by applying
them to new problems, or to create new problems by effective criticism of
the ideas themselves.
