OK, this is very much what I _thought_ "subject construction" was meant to deal with. But this has very little to do with diegesis, although diegesis can be one, among many, of the vehicles whereby the process is effected. I also don't see how it in any way clashes with notions of auteurism or personal styles of filmmaking, as James was suggesting.
