OK, this is very much what I _thought_ "subject construction" was meant to
deal with.  But this has very little to do with diegesis, although diegesis
can be one, among many, of the vehicles whereby the process is effected.
I also don't see how it in any way clashes with notions of auteurism
or personal styles of filmmaking, as James was suggesting.  James was
also tying it in to the notion of "fantasy", suggesting (to me at least)
that he was using "fantasy" interchangeably with the "imaginary" of the
quote above -- an interchange which I find misleading and muddle-producing.
