The essays by Patricia White (on lesbian apparations and THE HAUNTING) and Meghan Morris (on KING KONG) should be quite useful for any project on gender and cinematic space. Lynn Kirby's new book, PARALLEL TRACKS, on the codevelopment of the railroads and cinema, has some interesting things to say about the connections between male hysteria, technology, and the modernization of space. Shelley Stamp Lindsay's work on early cinema and an emergent women's public sphere might also be helpful. Her book is forthcoming, but she's had pieces published in recent issues of Quarterly Review of Film & Video (vol 16, no. 1), and Screen. There's tons of other stuff out there (Diana Agrest's work, Aaron Betsky's Building Sex, Giuliana Bruno's study of early Italian city films, etc., etc.)....if I think of any more, I'll send em along. good luck, David Conner History of Consciousness UC Santa Cruz --- from list film-theory-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
