Hi Sarahjane. Your thesis sounds really interesting.

Can't give you much in the way of theory, but your message reminded 
me of a German film called The Virgin Machine, directed by Monika 
Treut. This, as far as I remember, involves the love life of a woman 
who has a couple of men around the place but ends up in a big romance 
with a female stripper who she first comes across performing in an 
act where she dresses as a man and frolics with a banana!
She breaks up with this woman in the end because it turns out that 
for her the relationship wasn't romance but a job.

It was a film I enjoyed, but I don't remember much more about it.
