Sarahjane,
Several titles rather spontaneously come to mind regarding the
spectaclization and spectatorship of women. the most important work that
comes to mind first is by Laura Mulvey and Terese deLaretis. Zizek's
Looking Awry may prove interesting as would Narrative Apparatus,
Ideologyz by Philip Rosen. Mark Bracher's Lacan, Discourse, and Social
Change would prove helpful as well.
Essentially, Film Theory is in its third generation, beginning with
Freud and his model of the consciousness and unconsciousness. The second
generation is heralded by Jaques Lacan, who modified Freud's stages of
development and describes and it in terms of an infant's ability to
accurately perceive him/herself in a mirror. This model applies real
well to film theory in particular because of how readily one can
exchange the mirror as reflection of either an unrecognized or
differentiated self for the cinema screen, where the spectator invests
in the characterization of the film stars as the mirror image.
as any of this relates to women spectators and lesbian pornography, I am
at a loss. Hopefully some of the works you find will round out your
topic nicely.
Hoping that this helps, George
