Yau" <yau-AT-oxy.edu> Subject: Visualizing Eros: Film Series and Symposium Dear Friends, I would like to invite you to attend our mini-film series and symposium entitled: "VISUALIZING EROS: Asian Cinemas, Asian American Videos, and Intercultural Flows". From April 30 to May 21, 1998, selected Asian films and Asian American videos that address eros and eroticism will be screened on Thursday evenings, in the Auditorium of the new Humanities Instructional Building (Room 100) on the campus of the University of California, Irvine. On May 21, 1998, a half-day symposium will take place at UCI, with a keynote speech by Rey Chow (UCI), scholarly presentations by David James (USC), Miriam Silverberg (UCLA) and Sumita Chakravarty (New School of Social Research) and video presentations by Ming Yuen S. Ma and Tran T. Kim-trang. On April 30, the Visualizing Eros film series opened with Oshima Nagisa's erotic classic, "In the Realm of the Senses", shown in a beautiful 35mm print, along with Tran T. Kim-trang's video, "Kore". We had a young and enthusiastic audience. This coming Thursday evening, the Korean erotic film "To You, From Me" and Hong Kong's "A Chinese Ghost Story" will be shown. The schedule for upcoming screenings are listed below. We are offering a niffy "Visualizing Eros" poster as a souvenir to you when you showed up in our film series and asked for it. "A Chinese Ghost Story" (Ching Siu-tung, 1987) 101 minutes Produced by Tsui Hark of <Peking Opera Blues> fame, the film is unrestrained in its imagination. Thursday May 14, 7.30pm "Toc Storee" (Ming Yuen S. Ma, 1992) 21 minutes Sexuality, desire, identity come together through gay Asian story-telling. "Fire" (Deepa Mehta, 1997) 104 minutes Indian-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta let forbidden love and desire explode in the face of taboos. Thursday May 21 Closing Night Reception at 7.30pm Film screening will start at 8pm "Stand By Your Man" (Cheleenan Svetvilas, 1993) 3 minutes A satirical music video of re-edited Hollywood film clips of Asian female roles. "Happy Together" (Wong Kar-wai, 1997) 20 minutes Director Wong Kar-wai won Best Director with this film at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Featuring Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung as two Hong Kong gay lovers in Argentina.
